SEPTEMBER 11, 2015

SETH ROLLINS LIKELY LOSING ONE OF HIS TITLES AT ‘NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS,’ BUT WHICH ONE IS IT GONNA BE?

As announced two weeks ago on RAW, Seth Rollins will defend both the United States Championship and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions on September 20. So, it’ll be one of those rare times in WWE where a guy wrestles twice in the same night, and, as Sheamus teased on Monday, Seth Rollins could be wrestling three times if Sheamus ends up cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase, but, that’s unlikely.

So, how will Seth Rollins do at Night of Champions? Will he lose both titles? Retain both? Or, retain one and lose one? Well, Rollins is a heavy favorite in one of his title matches, and a heavy underdog in the other.

It appears that Seth Rollins is the heavy underdog in his United States Championship match with John Cena, which doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s losing the title, as WWE has changed finishes of matches in the past based on betting odds. However, there is some new John Cena merchandise that is set to be released that suggests that he is regaining the U.S. Title on September 20.

So, what about Rollins vs. Sting for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship? Well, the match positioning alone should give away the finish, as it’s currently scheduled to take place in the middle of the card, and the U.S. Title match will close the show. On top of that, Seth Rollins is the heavy favorite to defeat Sting, making Sting 0-2 in WWE.

If WWE is planning on having Sting defeat Seth Rollins, and win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the positioning of the match on the card is a bit odd to say the least, because it would be quite the feel-good moment, as it would be Sting’s first WWE Title win.
Of course, the match order could be changed between now and the day of the show, but, as of right now, WWE sees Rollins vs. Cena as the most anticipated match on the Night of Champions card, and they believe that it’ll be a better match to close the show with, as the Sting vs. Rollins match will likely have some sort of screwy finish.
Just in case you’re wondering what exactly the odds are for both of Seth Rollins’ matches at Night of Champions, well, you can check them out below.

WWE Superstar Power Rankings for 9/7/2015

Watch List

Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose is embroiled in a renewed feud with The Wyatt Family. On Raw, he faced newest Wyatt Family Member Braun Strowman in a match that was called off after The Wyatts beat down Ambrose and Roman Reigns, who was ringside.

On SmackDown, Ambrose and Reigns got a team win by disqualification over The New Day.  Under normal circumstances, that could earn them a Tag Team Championship opportunity. But with The Wyatts bearing down and a six-man tag team Match against them at Night of Champions upcoming, the tag team titles are far from Ambrose's mind.

Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens has performed well lately.  On Raw, he defeated Cesaro. And on Main Event, he defeated Jack Swagger.  The question now is, can he get himself back into title contention? He has the skill set, and if he keeps winning, it may not be long before he's back in championship contention.

10. The Dudley Boyz

The Dudley Boyz have exploded onto the scene in WWE over the past two weeks. They defeated The New Day on Raw in a non-title match and then defeated the Prime Time Players (who still are owed a rematch for the WWE Tag Team Championships) on SmackDown.

They have basically run roughshod over the WWE tag team division, and barring anything major, they could be in line for a shot at the WWE Tag team Championships at Night of Champions. Will they get that shot, or do they have to wait for the Prime Time Players' rematch?

9. Sting

Sting didn't compete in any matches this week, but the No. 1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship had plenty to say on Raw. As seen in the video above, Sting compared WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins to Triple H unfavorably and vowed he'd defeat him at Night of Champions.

Sting got more good news on Raw when it was revealed Rollins would compete twice at Night of Champions. John Cena will get his WWE United States Championship rematch, and later Sting will face Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Can Sting take advantage of what is sure to be a weakened and tired Rollins?

8. The New Day

It was not a good week for the reigning WWE tag team champions The New Day.  Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods may be champions, but they have more competition than ever right now.  They picked up a loss against The Dudley Boyz on Raw, and on SmackDown, they lost to Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose by disqualification when Xavier Woods broke up a pin attempt.

The question now is, who will be named the No. 1 contenders for their Tag Team Championships? Will it be the Dudleys, who have run roughshod over every top team over the past two weeks? Or perhaps the Prime Time Players, who are still owed a rematch?

7. Neville

Neville keeps picking up wins and is slowly climbing the rankings.  On SmackDown, he was slated to have a match with Stardust, but Stardust attacked him before the bout could get under way and never happened.  Joining in on the beatdown was The Ascension, who have apparently aligned themselves with Stardust.

On Superstars, Neville teamed up with The Lucha Dragons to pick up a win over Stardust and The Ascension. It's likely we'll see more of Neville and Stardust going forward, but can Neville find permanent allies to even the odds?

6. Randy Orton

Randy Orton did not compete this past week on WWE TV and therefore drops a couple of spots. That's more due to others moving ahead of him than him being idle, though.

It's unclear where Randy Orton goes from here. Does he continue feuding with Sheamus? Does he insert himself into the WWE World heavyweight Championship picture somehow? What's up next for Orton?

Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns, as well as his partner Dean Ambrose, has been picking up some wins lately, and he finds himself back in the top five as a result. Reigns and Ambrose took a beating on Raw at the hands of Braun Strowman and the rest of The Wyatt Family.

But on SmackDown, the two defeated the The New Day via disqualification when Xavier Woods, who was not in the match, broke up a pinfall. A win over the tag team champions is no small feat, but with The Wyatts hot on Reigns' heels, there's no time to celebrate.

The Wyatts alluded to a match this past Thursday on SmackDown. And Saturday morning, WWE announced a six-man tag team match between The Wyatts and Ambrose, Reigns and a "mystery partner." Who will Reigns and Ambrose recruit to even the odds? And will this mark a new iteration of The Shield?

4. John Cena

John Cena got what he wanted this week. On Raw, it was declared by Stephanie McMahon that he would indeed get his rematch for the WWE United States Championship against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions.

The question now is, can Cena take advantage of what will clearly be a distracted and worried Seth Rollins and regain the U.S. title? And what role, if any, will his match have in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match later in the evening?

3. Sheamus

Mr. Money in the Bank Sheamus only competed in one match this week. On SmackDown, Sheamus faced off against Cesaro. After a tough match, The Celtic Warrior picked up the victory, giving him momentum and keeping him steady at No. 3 in the rankings.

So far, he has no scheduled match at Night of Champions. While that might change, the lack of a match may give him the chance to take advantage of either an exhausted Seth Rollins or possibly a victorious Sting, should he decide to cash in his Money in the Bank contract.

The timing may not ever be better for Sheamus. But will he actually attempt to cash in at Night of Champions?

2. Ryback

WWE intercontinental champion Ryback continued his winning ways this week, picking up a victory in his only match. On Raw, he faced Big Show in a match where the Intercontinental Championship was on the line. The Miz was on commentary for the bout.

The Miz distracted Big Show during the match, and Big Show yelled at the crowd for shouting "please retire" at him. The two distractions allowed Ryback to hit Show with a Shell Shocked and retain his title. With that win, Ryback seems to be finished with Big Show. The question now is, who will face Ryback for the title at Night of Champions?

1. Seth Rollins

WWE world heavyweight champion and WWE United States champion Seth Rollins didn't compete in any matches this week. But he did find out what his schedule will be like at Night of Champions. In addition to the already-scheduled match between Rollins and Sting for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he will be forced to defend the WWE United States Championship against John Cena the same night.

Presumably, the match with Cena will come first, followed by the match with Sting. Can Rollins successfully defend both titles at Night of Champions? And regardless of the outcome of the U.S. title match, what, if anything, will he have left in the tank when he faces Sting?

Top WWE Star Likely Written Off TV For Several Weeks

Based on what happened on WWE Raw this past Monday night, speculation has been that Randy Orton might be teaming with Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns to face The Wyatt Family at Night of Champions.

However,, Orton is not currently written into any storyline plans for the next several weeks, and it appears the beatdown he took from The Wyatt Family on Raw was a way to write Orton off WWE for a few weeks.

As of this writing there is no word on why Orton has been taken off WWE TV.

Kurt Angle Should End His Career With WWE

During an interview, Kurt Angle revealed he would not re-sign with TNA. Instead, he plans to take a break form the wrestling business.

Dealing with the inescapable wear-and-tear of professional wrestling, including a history of serious neck surgeries, it’s no secret that Angle is nearing the end of his in-ring career. At 46, with a very physical technical wrestling style, it’s fair to question whether Angle should ever wrestle again. But if he opts for one last run, it should be in WWE.

In April, Angle spoke about his failed attempt to return to WWE, claiming the promotion canceled a meeting designed to discuss a possible comeback.  “From a wrestling standpoint, they just weren’t interested,” claimed Angle.

With WWE currently investing in new talent, it makes sense that they would bypass a potentially monumental return from an attitude-era star. While WWE is going young, however, one cannot deny the presence of older wrestlers in prominent positions currently on its roster.  Considering the amount of veterans who are still active, it’s hard to imagine there is no room for Kurt Angle.

Sting, 56, is a decade older than Angle and will be participating in the main event of the upcoming Night of Champions pay-per-view opposite Seth Rollins.  Last month, SummerSlam weekend featured Jushin Thunder Liger, 50, make a special appearance for NXT while The Undertaker, 50, main evented the big-four pay-per-view.

The Dudley Boyz, at a combined age of 87, are in the thick of a tag team title hunt against rising stars The New Day. The Big Show, 43, recently competed for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam and remains one of the few constants of WWE’s often-volatile midcard. Mixing old talent with new is a smart way to keep a wide range of fans engaged while raising the profile of future stars.

Not only would Angle be able to raise their profiles on name value, but he remains competent in the ring and can have potentially great matches with technical wrestling standouts such as the aforementioned Rollins.

Of course, struggles outside of the ring contribute to Angles’ glaring downside. In 2013, Angle was arrested for a DUI, his fourth alcohol-related arrest in six years. WWE has had no shortage of negative PR in 2015. From more untimely deaths of legendary wrestlers, to racial scandals involving contracted talents to the murder trial of a WWE Hall of Famer, an ugly subplot for WWE in 2015 is the year of public scandal.

Perhaps WWE views Kurt Angle as yet another pro wrestling scandal waiting to happen, and they feel he simply isn’t worth the risk. WWE’s relationship with Angle has seemed strained for years.  In 2010, WWE released arather petty DVD  of its top 50 wrestlers of all time, placing Angle 34th on that list (Hulk Hogan, also a TNA employee at the time, was listed at 23rd.)

Oftentimes, WWE’s history is at the mercy of Vince McMahon’s temperament. But time heals all wounds, and whether it’s as a trainer at the Performance Center or as a special attraction, I cannot imagine a world where WWE has no need for an all-time great like Angle.
